Most dwarf hybrids are a result of crossing the Munchkin with various cat breeds.
Munchkins were created naturally by a spontaneous mutation that resulted in a shortening of the long bones in the limbs. Breeders who discovered these special cats then began to selectively breed them to other domestic cats and formed a breed standard that was later accepted by TICA. Munchkins are now an established breed.
The gene that is responsible for dwarfism is a dominant gene. Only short legged dwarfs can pass this gene on to their offspring. Long-legged munchkins do not carry the dwarfism gene. Basically, what you see is what you get...so it's easy to see which cats carry the dwarfism gene.
How tall is a dwarf cat?
Most dwarfs are only as tall as a soda can or bottle of water.
