Peterbalds

Designer Cat Network -Where imagination meets design.

The Peterbald is a breed that originated in Russia in 1994 when an oriental shorthair was bred to a Donskoy (also known as Don Hairless or Don Sphynx). This breed has a long body, long legs, narrow triangular muzzle, and large ears resembling the same body type as the oriental and siamese breeds. Peterbalds come in both the hairless and brush coated varieties and any color is acceptable. Hairless peterbalds may have a very fine soft fuzz on their bodies that makes their skin feel like soft suede. The brush coated peterbalds have a sparse wirehaired type of coat that is a bit coarser in texture.

The gene responsible for the peterbald's hairless coat is a dominant trait as opposed to the recessive gene that causes the hairless coat in the sphynx. Because of this, it is possible to breed hairless peterbalds in just one generation if you were to breed a hairless peterbald to a normal coated cat. The sphynx gene would take two generations to express the hairless coat in the offspring.

Peterbalds are an elegant breed that is very loving with their families. They are an energetic cat and usually do well with other pets. They are not loner cats though and thrive on attention from their people. Peterbalds may be an option for people with allergies as it is easier to keep their coat clean and relatively dander free, but no cat breed is completely hypoallergenic.

Peterbalds are currently accepted for registration by The International Cat Association (TICA).
